POP-UP ART SHOW
Celebrating the Art of Richard Thomas
Thursday, November 18, 2017 3pm – 10pm 10 November 2017, Asheville, NC The historic Flatiron Building is hosting its first Pop-up Art Show featuring the art of Richard Thomas. This marks the first in a series of art, culture, and environmental events hosted in the lobby of the Flatiron Building at 20 Battery Park Avenue and in the connected Green Room of the World Coffee Cafe. Specials on beer, wine, and cocktails will be available. The event will occur during a seven-hour time span on the afternoon of Saturday, November 18, 3pm-10pm.
Collectors, art lovers, models and gallery owners are encouraged to attend. Thomas’s knowledge and appreciation of sketching the human form has been recognized by collectors around the country. “With graphite he works very quickly on cream or white paper he has toned with an acrylic wash of raw sienna. Later in the studio, he adds color that can be pure and saturated. Sometimes he puddles it. Sometimes edges are defined with color. He allows paint to assert its material nature. Having studied and absorbed the lessons of many artists including: Winslow Homer, Gustav Klimt, Henri Matisse, Auguste Rodin, Egon Schiele, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, and Eduoard Vuillard, Richard Thomas has distinguished himself with a style and contribution that is his own.
His drawings are compelling because they encourage our engagement not only with the appearance of his subjects but also with the nuances of being human he has observed and recorded.” Mark Ormond, former curator Ringling Museum of Art Thomas captures the spirit and balance and integrity of his models. His interest is to distill the personality of his subjects with organic lines and impressionistic vision. His facile control of line defines the essential presence of the many models that grace his downtown studio.
